The BMW 2 Series's current nationwide average price is $31,334, and its lowest point over the past year was $30,379. Recently, prices have come down for the 2023, 2024, and 2025 models, making now a good time to shop recent model years.
Is the BMW 2 Series a good car?
Yes — the BMW 2 Series earns strong marks from owners for its performance-focused character and premium feel. The all-generations owner rating is 4.96/5 across every model year in the data.
Owners consistently praise the 2 Series for its sharp handling, sporty driving feel, and strong performance. Many also appreciate the comfort and luxury touches that make it feel like a true BMW, even in a compact package.
Expert reviews rate the 2015 and 2022 models among the highest across all years.
The main trade-offs that show up in recent expert reviews are a firm ride, a cramped back seat, and technology that can feel unintuitive in some versions.
37.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
Are BMW 2 Series models reliable?
Owners consistently praise the BMW 2 Series for its power, handling, and everyday usability, and expert coverage reinforces its sporty, well-built character. Across the model years in the data, it comes across as a car that delivers a rewarding driving experience while still feeling comfortable enough for daily use.
- Owners rate the BMW 2 Series between 4.67 and 5.0 out of 5 stars across all model years in the data.
For used buyers, long-term ownership risk is tied more to upkeep and running costs than to the car’s core appeal, so a well-maintained example with a clean history is the safest path.
What should I look for when buying a used BMW 2 Series?
Across all model years, accident-free inventory is solid at 83.9% — always verify the vehicle history report.
| Model Year | Accident-Free % |
|---|---|
| 2026 | 95.6% |
| 2025 | 94.7% |
| 2024 | 92.2% |
| 2023 | 87.3% |
| 2022 | 80.7% |
| 2021 | 74.4% |
| 2020 | 71.4% |
| 2019 | 67.2% |
| 2018 | 58.6% |
| 2017 | 55.8% |
| 2016 | 54.6% |
| 2015 | 57.6% |
| 2014 | 59.7% |
Older model years carry meaningfully higher accident rates, so always verify the vehicle history report on pre-2022 models.
Key things to evaluate:
- Fuel efficiency: The 2025 BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe is powered by a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine. The entry level 228 xDrive Gran Coupe is rated at 241 horsepower, which is 13 hp more than the previous version’s powertrain. The M235 xDrive Gran Coupe we drove increases output to 312 hp, which is 10 hp more than its predecessor. These second-generation Gran Coupes feature a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission, and all-wheel-drive (AWD) is standard. The 228 xDrive is the fuel economy leader of the 2 Series Gran Coupe lineup, with an EPA-estimated 26 mpg city, 38 mpg highway, and 30 mpg in combined driving. The M235 xDrive drops to 24/33 mpg city/highway, and 27 mpg combined.
Which BMW 2 Series trim should I buy?
The 2025 BMW 2 Series offers these trims:
- 228 xDrive Gran Coupe: Standard all-wheel drive, a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine, a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission, a 10.7-inch infotainment touchscreen, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a wireless charging pad, and a Harman Kardon premium sound system make this the best-value trim for shoppers who want the core 2 Series Gran Coupe experience.
- M235 xDrive Gran Coupe: More power, upgraded brakes, a rear spoiler, unique interior trim, sport seats, and a sport steering wheel add a more performance-focused character, while the available M Performance package brings a sport suspension, M brakes, M Sport seats, and 19-inch wheels with performance tires.
What BMW 2 Series do most buyers choose?
The BMW 2 Series years with the most listings are 2025, 2026, and 2024.
| Model Year | Total Listings | Good + Great Deals % |
|---|---|---|
| 2025 | 1,572 | 39.3% |
| 2026 | 1,281 | 40.1% |
| 2024 | 1,032 | 38.5% |
| 2027 | 766 | 38% |
| 2023 | 724 | 34% |
| 2022 | 672 | 33.5% |
Higher-volume years usually give you more choices in trims, colors, and mileage, which makes it easier to compare listings and find a strong match. They also tend to be the years shoppers focus on most, so pricing and deal activity are often easier to evaluate.
What is the BMW 2 Series's resale value?
| Model Year | Current Avg. Price | Year-Over-Year Change |
|---|---|---|
| 2025 | $36,794 | −17.14% |
| 2022 | $25,414 | −9.09% |
| 2021 | $21,549 | −9.0% |
| 2023 | $33,355 | −6.5% |
| 2024 | $33,447 | −5.86% |
| 2020 | $22,813 | −5.25% |
| 2016 | $16,063 | −5.2% |
| 2018 | $20,934 | −3.33% |
| 2015 | $14,918 | −2.79% |
| 2017 | $18,833 | −1.21% |
Most model years in the table are moving lower year over year, which is good news if you want to buy used. The biggest drops are concentrated in the newer years, while several older years are changing more slowly. That pattern suggests you may find stronger value in recent inventory, especially if you want a newer car without paying close to original pricing.
The 2017, 2015, and 2018 model years have held their value best, with the smallest year-over-year price changes.

Many appreciate the power and agility, along with the comfort and luxury touches that enhance the driving experience. Has almost every feature I need and want, the price I paid was a no brainer but in all honesty I was prepared to pay more. I wish it had blind spot notice and an Ariel camera view but it’s not deal breakers for me at all. I love the vehicle. I was set on an M240i but was open to years from 2018-2021 since that was my favorite body style. Ended up being able to get the newest and last year of the body style with great miles, and I’d have it no other way. Thank you Chantilly Auto!

One of the best driving cars. Balanced, peppy, great on gas and has all the bells and whistles I need. Roof rails to accommodate my bike rack, ski rack, and the AWD is literally incredible in the snow. Very reliable 4 cyl and never any serious mechanical issues between 70-110k miles.

Get a FULLY loaded version. Don't skimp out on the options. iDrive 8.5 is not customizable, the head unit is locked down hard so you can't access any fun things with your obd2 and Bimmercode. That was very disappointing....

Why it stands out
The 2026 BMW 2 Series stands out because it carries BMW’s entry-level performance-car formula into a compact coupe package. BMW positioned the 2 Series as a replacement for the 1 Series Coupe and 1 Series Convertible, and the model’s appeal has always centered on rear-wheel-drive dynamics and an available manual transmission that set it apart from rivals. That enthusiast focus is a big part of what makes the car distinctive: it is meant to feel more like a driver’s car than a conventional luxury coupe.
For the second-generation coupe, BMW made the car bigger and heavier, but also more muscular in appearance, with bulging fenders, a squared-off grille, and rectangular headlights and taillights. The lineup also gained more power, with the base 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-four rated at 255 horsepower and the 3.0-liter turbo inline-six at 382 hp. Standard equipment was strong for the class, including 18-inch alloy wheels, LED headlights with automatic high beams, leatherette seating surfaces, power-adjustable front sport seats, three-zone climate control, an 8.8-inch infotainment screen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, two USB ports, Amazon Alexa compatibility, and a 10-speaker audio system. Safety tech such as frontal collision warning and lane departure warning also came standard.
At the same time, the 2 Series does have some tradeoffs. The second-generation coupe no longer offers a convertible body style or a manual transmission, and the available transmission is an eight-speed automatic. The model’s strengths are still clear, though: it offers a sporty driving character, a well-equipped cabin, and a range of available features such as a head-up display, adaptive cruise control, a 360-degree camera, and self-parking functionality on higher trims.
